Fire place instructions

1.) Prep the fire place

  • Using the fire poker (or your hand) push the damper up to open the flue. This MUST be opened in order to start a fire.

  • Build your fire using dry, well-cured hardwood logs, kindling (small sticks), and tinder (such as newspaper or dry bark).

  • Make sure that all logs and kindling stay within the fireplace grate area. Overloading this area can lead to serious fire risk.

2.) Light the fire

  • Ignite the tinder or fire starter using long matches or a lighter. Light at several spots if possible to ensure even ignition.

  • Once fire is going, close the fire place screen within the fire box and place the moveable screen in front of the fireplace to catch errant embers.

3.) Maintaining and adjusting the fire

  • To maintain an established fire (large logs are burning steadily), add more wood as the fire burns down, but don't overload the firebox. Overfilling risks excessive smoke and damage to the fireplace structure.

  • A fire poker and tongs are available to reposition burning wood.

4.) Extinguishing and Cleaning Up

  • Allow the fire to burn down naturally; do not use water or any other means to extinguish the fire inside the firebox (this damages firebox and will cause significant smoke).

  • After all embers are out and ashes fully cooled, clean out ashes and debris.

  • Close the flue.

Safety reminders

  • Never leave a fire unattended.

  • Keep combustibles and children away from the fireplace at all times.

  • Both fire screens should be in position when there is an active fire.
